How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages (Step-by-Step Guide)
Have you ever deleted an important WhatsApp message by mistake — maybe a business chat, a photo, or a sweet message from a loved one — and wished you could get it back? Don’t panic. WhatsApp actually provides a few simple ways to recover deleted messages, depending on your phone type and backup settings.
In this guide, we’ll show you step-by-step how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on both Android and iPhone.
1️⃣ Check Your WhatsApp Backup
The easiest way to recover deleted WhatsApp messages is through your backup. WhatsApp automatically backs up your chats daily, weekly, or monthly — depending on your settings.
✅ On Android:
Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup.
Check the Last Backup Date — this shows when your chats were last saved.
If the message was deleted after that backup, you can restore it.
✅ On iPhone:
Open Settings → Chats → Chat Backup in WhatsApp.
Check if you have a recent backup stored in iCloud.
2️⃣ Restore from WhatsApp Backup
Once you’ve confirmed there’s a backup that includes your deleted messages, follow these steps:
✅ On Android:
Uninstall WhatsApp from your phone.
Reinstall it from the Google Play Store.
Open WhatsApp and verify your phone number.
When prompted, tap Restore from Google Drive or local storage.
Wait for the restore to finish — your deleted messages will reappear!
✅ On iPhone:
Uninstall WhatsApp.
Reinstall from the App Store.
Open WhatsApp → Verify your number → Tap Restore Chat History from iCloud.
3️⃣ Recover Without Backup (Advanced Method)
If you never turned on backup or deleted a message after the last backup, recovery gets trickier — but not impossible.
🔹 On Android:
WhatsApp keeps local backups on your phone for up to 7 days.
Go to:
File Manager → WhatsApp → DatabasesYou’ll see files like
msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14.Rename the file you want to restore to
msgstore.db.crypt14.Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp → tap Restore when asked.
⚠️ Note: This only works if you haven’t cleared your storage or deleted the database folder.
🔹 On iPhone:
For iPhones without backup, your best option is to use iTunes backup (if you had one) or specialized iPhone data recovery tools like Dr.Fone or iMyFone D-Back. These tools can scan your phone and recover deleted chats directly from your device memory.
